3 Reasons to Avoid Social Media During Your Divorce
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media sites have become exceedingly popular in recent years. In fact, according to the Pew Research Center, more than 70% of American adults admit to regularly using some type of social media.
While there is usually nothing inherently wrong with sharing a meme or posting a pithy quip, your social media usage may complicate your divorce. Here are three reasons you may want to avoid social media until your divorce proceedings conclude.
1. Private Content May Not Stay Private
Many social media platforms allow users to tweak privacy settings. Even if you limit who may view your content, you cannot guarantee that private content remains so. If you do not want your soon-to-be ex-spouse’s lawyer to read your posts in open court, you may want to forego posting altogether.
2. Social Media May Damage Your Case
During your divorce, you must split marital assets. If you have children, you also must figure out custody and child support. If your social media accounts reflect ill-advised behaviors, such as lavish spending, you may damage your case.
3. You May Lose Friends
It may be tempting to battle your husband or wife on social media. If you have friends in common, though, your social media content may force them to choose sides. Some of your friends may even disengage completely.
While your friends may not be your top priority during your divorce, you may need to rely on them for future support. By staying off social media until your divorce is over, you protect important relationships.
